Description: BACKGROUND: One year after the domestic elections, a new committee was forged in order to run the Municipality of Rethymno Counsil. This new committee has fresh ideas about all things concerning the city. From the beginning they new the power of a logo. A city emblem that would unite everyone and be recognizable by everyone. CHALLENGE: The only visual identity the city of rethymno had so far was an ancient coin that depicted two dolphins encircling each other and in the middle the ancient name of the city âRithyâ that means Rethymno. A later sculpture execution of the logo had been presented as the cityâs landmark and emblem. These should not be touched but simply apply meanings of volunteering, fellowship, environmental feelings and all this to be presented in a very contemporary way that would identify the new committee and its work. SOLUTION: The dolphins were simplified and stylized but as a form remained intact. A rough square was applied behind them, symbolizing the sea and the waters the city of Rethymno is surrounded with and a color frame, consisting of small pebbles and stones such as in a ancient Mediterranean floor mosaic. This mosaic symbolizes the people of rethymno, the various personalities, ideas, nationalities, minds, cultures etc that live in the city that they all need to work and live together in this small town and help each other and all together help the city become a more friendly and civilized place to live in. RESULT: The logo has been applied on banners, posters, brochures, awards and slowly becomes a very recognizable logo from every citizen of this town.
