The first stage in creating Lab diamonds, or synthetic diamonds, is to create a boule. A boule is essentially an extremely pure and tightly-controlled chunk of carbon. That's important because in order to grow a diamond, scientists need a specific type of carbon crystal that can be heated and compressed enough to transform into a diamond.
