During the Renaissance, artists such as Botticelli and Raphael made many depictions of naked women. In his famous painting The Birth of Venus, Botticelli used the technique of cloisonn to conceal the virgin’s genitalia. She reveals her breasts with gestures of modesty, while the position of her legs – inspired by the ancient technique of contrapposto – emphasizes her feminine curves.
