Prsonally, I like having the notches there -- it makes me 'see' the pen nub, no offense logomotive. If it wasn't there, some people might think the nub is just a cord, for a windowshade under the curtains. I like it as-is.
@jf, to each their own but I like the aha factor an we see it as a nib OR curtain pulled back regardless. My thought was that curtains don't naturally have a %22notch%22 and neither does a pen, well at least the ones I use. Nice regardless.

This is beautiful and well executed. Have to admit my first reaction, before reading the comments, was that the notches weren't needed. The pun is more subtle without them. But a beauty none the less.
