I have no idea why, but this reminds me of an 'Escape from New York' style film ... it doesn't really say 'church' to me. If you keep the skyline I would remove the long vertical line on the left to let the type breathe a bit. Maybe try to incorporate a cross in the type? I was looking for something there but didn't find anything %3B)
I agree this doesn't communicate church too much for me, but you have to make a cool logo out of your user name! Then you have to make a T-shirt and I'd buy it. :-)
I finally updated the logo background. The black certainly made it look movie-esque, but the church was actually started out of a movie theater. And I agree that it doesn't actually symbolically communicate church, but it's meant to be more generic like Mars Hill (http://www.marshill.org/), or like Cornerstone in Chandler, Arizona (http://www.cornerstonechandler.com/).
