Description: Esme Barrera tragically left this earth on New Year's Day 2012. My brother, who worked with her, asked if I could create a graphic in her honor to use on various items. Although I didn’t know Esme personally, I kept hearing about her deep love for music. In my mind, I pictured someone fully immersed in the moment, throwing up rock hands—a pure expression of passion for music. That image stuck with me because when you love music that much, it feels like the ultimate gesture of joy and connection. As I started sketching the idea on a napkin, my wife noticed and said, “You know, that’s also the sign for love.” It was such a meaningful realization, and I knew then that this concept could be something special if I brought it to life the right way. This is an incredibly heartbreaking story, and my heart sank knowing that the Austin community had lost someone as wonderful as Esme, and my brother had lost a dear friend and co-worker. Designing this graphic felt like the least I could do to honor her memory and celebrate the love and spirit she shared with so many.
