You should ad to your description that the number 1 in the negative space helped to form the letter P (Cyrillic) of the word 'Pervaya' or 'The First'. Lower cut of the 'a' was not necessary in my opinion, an 'ar' ligature would be more interesting visually, especially if pulled out smoothly.
