The fundamental necessity of the sketchpad process

This post has been kindly guest-authored by The Paper Bull (website currently offline).

As a reader of this design blog, I've always appreciated it when David shares his sketchpad with us and shows projects that are in development.

my sketchpads are crazy!!!... if i open a new pad with a clean page my mind goes blank.. ill have to scribble on that page (anything really!.. superheroes, cartoon characters, limbs etc..) just so that its no longer a clean page & sometimes I'll leave it at that & then come back later.. its like a 'warm up'... more often then not i prefer to be talking to someone on the phone so that my minds not focused & then come away with a ''wow! how did i do that?!?!'' kinda thing. When i worked as a customer service adviser i hated it but the sketches i came away with while dealing with a complaint were brilliant! i also like to draw on scrap paper that is a bit old & battered & worn out.. for some reason that so helps, that there is already something there even if its not at all related.

I too love to draw and doodle while talking on the phone. It's as if your hand is almost hypnotized and just draws whatever it thinks of. The results upon finishing the conversation can be quite amazing. :-) Good stuff, dude.

we need to find how to reach that state of mind so as to be able to draw like that... without having to make a damn call!...

I think loud music helps, something blaring in the background. Really what you are experiencing if i might be so non scientific is the distraction of the left brain. The left brain is the logic side while the right is the creative art side, they are constantly fighting each other, which ever one is dominant gives you certain talents obviously dominant right brains are more artistically creative, while lefties are more analytical, so if you can learn to distract or 'shut down' the argument between the two you can do amazing things.

I think talking on the phone is a left brains function as that is where your speech and logic are centered so while your left brain is distracted your right brain is clear to focus on something more artistic, and can 'control' the motor functions of the left side while its busy handling your conversation :) all non-scientific mind you, not sure if a lick of that is actually true lmao!!!

hhhmmm... interesting Climax.. you know.. in some countries you would need plastic gloves to pick up what you just dropped & put it in special bins provided.. ;)

lmao i actually looked up the info after the fact and i'm actually pretty close to being right, save being able to control what the two hemispheres do.

Interesting thoughts, guys. I know for me, music is essential while I'm designing. It does exactly what you said, David, it shuts down the left side and keeps me more in touch with my creative side. Have any of you ever experienced that weird driving phenomenon? You know, when you realize two miles down the road, you haven't been paying attention to anything and you are almost at a loss for words as how you ended up at that point? A lot of my inspiration comes while driving. Crazy! But can you say, tax write off?! :-)
