Why is the ring visible towards the middle? The dark side of the planet would be overlapping it a bit (imagine completing the circle of your crescent shape.)

Valid question, my partner asked me the same thing at the time. I did try a version where the ring disappeared behind the planet, but aesthetically it just wasn't as pleasing so I kept it this way. Perhaps it would benefit from some repositioning. Thanks for your comment.
