Description: Empire Beer Group logo that was signed off by the client but then changed when the company floated on the stock exchange. This more commercial version was switched for a coporate brand that did not include the illustration.

not to be too historically critical but the type face you used is pretty russian looking. The soldier looks pretty brittish. it might just bother me but I think it couldn't hurt to match. Also the Bevelling bothers me.

The font is actually 'art deco'. Which was a feature of all of the company's branding. The Colonial character is a reference to 'Colonial Brewing Co' the company behind Empire's float on the stock exchange. It is not a perfect marriage but for this job it made sense.

brilliant mark ... the concept works fantastically well, its a shame the client scrapped the illustration. It adds alot of character and charm to this logo ... making me feel like I'm drinking the beer that all the queen's men drank.

aaahhhh! original, muy buena ilustracion, solo tengo una pregunta segun la leyes que regulan la publicidad de bebidas alcoholicas se prohibe mostrar a personas bebiendo al menos en mi pais mexico, es solo un detalle que no se si sea norma internacional, por esa razon no salen imagenes de gente bebiendo, solo vasos llenos, botellas cerradas o liquido. pero muy bien!!

Clashmore: For the benefit of those people that don't speak Spanish, below is a Babelfish translation. aaahhhh! original, very good illustration, I only have a question according to the laws that they regulate the alcoholic drink publicity is prohibited to show people drinking at least in my Mexico country, it is only a detail that not if it is international norm, for that reason images do not leave people drinking, only full glasses, closed bottles or liquid. but very well done!! And in response to that question. This was never discussed during the design process. As mentioned above, the logo never went ahead so we never had to cross that bridge. Tassdj: The original version of this logo appeared on logopond for 6 months which is why the comments above refer to the type, which, in my opinion brought the whole design down. Since then I have removed the type and re-uploaded the mark which was always the focal point of this design.

OK! that hurts really has much potential, by justificacion of design makes me an original proposal. perhaps it can sell to a new company. almost able to display this image in an advertisement spectacular. I like the results achieved but the image is to be big. greetings.

a rip-off? I am from Slovakia and recently in TV there was an ad on Pilsner Urquel, a world famous Czech beer, featuring a colonial pioneer traveling through Africa and drinking Pilsner. So the question is, whos got this idea first? Not to offend anyone, but this connection between a colonial man/beer is too specific, to be chosen accidental.

In a world with 7 billion people the notion that two people on different sides of the globe can't have a similar idea? One has to be a rip-off? I don't know how recent that commercial is but this logo/concept was developed in early 2006 so it has been around for a while. The original idea came from colonial beer posters that we found in a book. Perhaps Pilsner Urquell flicked through that same book.

Thanks for the kind comments. Although this mark was never approved by the client, it will always take pride of place in my folio. I was convinced that it satisfied the brief and the client agreed until their management company recommended a 'type only' logo. I will have a go at a redesign of the type in the weeks to come, so that it is finally complete.

b3nder & clashmore: I did not state, that the author of this made the rip-off, it could have been Pilsner or even just accidental. That commercial I was talking about goes around for half a year now I think. If I see two similar things, I simply ask questions, that's all, don't take it personaly. And clashmore - please no lessons in English, just because of one 'l'. In my country we are not used to call it in English, we call as the locals do, that is 'plze%u0148' ;-)

im with ogtbarnes on this one. Its one thing to take inspiration from photography, real life, art, etc, but this is WAY too literal a duplication. I'd advise your remove this one from your folio entirely. while it is very well executed, it appears to me to be little more than a tracing of someone else's art. No matter how old the art is, tracing is a pretty huge faux pas. especially tracing such an iconic beer poster that seems to be well documented. I know this is a touchy subject, but copying is near and dear to my heart. Just put yourself in the poster artists shoes for a moment. imagine someone saw one of your designs, and traced it, maybe flipped the axis and then sold it as wall art. You would probably be pretty angry about it, or at least expect to be compensated. In your defence the artwork being compared here is VERY old, and perhaps now part of public domain, so you may in fact be in the right, but that said, i think you didnt do enough to make this original. You're a great designer, and im still a fan regardless of what you decide to do, but my advice is take it down as soon as you can.

I am well aware of this poster that is almost 100 years old. This poster was presented to us by the client at the concept stage and after many weeks of experimentation with other poses (sitting in deckchair, holding binoculars, riding elephant), the client insisted that the illustrator re-draw the same pose. The illustrator made a concerted effort to change as much of the illustration as possible to differentiate it from the original. All linework was redrawn and I assure everyone that nothing was traced. The client was well aware of the copyright issues and chose to proceed. Yes the pose and subject matter are the same but the poster (not logo) is well and truly outside of copyright and only 10% needs to be changed for it to be considered original. As it turns out, the illustration was never used and will never be used in a corporate sense. It will however take pride of place in my folio as although the subject matter is not 100% original, the logo is an original solution to the brief.

Woa. This just simply kills the awesomeness of this logo. At the very least you should've disclosed that it was a rehash of existing work so not to mislead viewers into thinking it was an original piece.
