I like the use of the bubble as the zero. Have you tried making the bubble smaller? (not sure if it would look worse or better)

I have, but it just looked more interesting with a larger bubble.
The smaller floating ones and the popped one on top are at the request of the client but look nicer on the animated Flash version.
