Hey, a possible solution for the apple, to look more like an "a", could be made by adding more "character". You could have bite marks to make an "a" or have it peeled. Also, you could make it into a half an apple with seeds exposed. The seeds could be place in such a way to suggest an "a". How about a worm chomping away at the apple and its tail acting as the descender/tail of the a.
