Dakshina Chitra
by saawan
Dakshina Chitra means 'Picture of South'. It is a place that showcases art, folk culture and architecture with an emphasis on the traditions of South India. The logo represents many things. A sun, a hand and a revolving potter's wheel with five of completed pots put aside. Apart from them it also shows D and C. The type is handcrafted.

The elements don't really gel well. Not sure what the odd rectangular shape stands for and the spiral with the 5 sparks feel very generic - having been to the site myself - i don't think it captures the essence of the place nor does it do justice to the various other art forms/ architecture that exists within it.

Thanks for commenting, Sandhya. But, here, I tend to completely disagree with you. The swirly sun or the swirl is a simple design element that is used commonly in most ancient art forms like batik art, rangoli and more. You can see them on various architectural engravings too. Also, it making a hand suggests ancient handicrafts. The rectangular shape, used to scale the type, can be interpreted as an abstract mud wall/ wooden wall as Dakshina Chitra is about the houses of South India that used to exist 150 years ago.

While the elements all make sense individually, their styles along with the font used don't really mold together as a cohesive unit to form a logo. the spiral symbol for instance has many different connotations so you might want to research more and work on what is atypical rather than what is more generic out there cos that to me is what makes the logo stand out and more unique.

This logo is entirely context dependent. You're suggesting international cultures in saying the swirl has different connotations. But, DC is specific to South India and its varying cultures. It doesn't interpret itself to the visitor according to his/ her culture. Anyhow, in every culture, the swirl has a good meaning. As you might know, logo design differs according to the needs. Not always do people need to create atypical logos. I feel that a logo holds the essence of an organization. And here, particularly, it should reflect South Indian heritage. Even in the Serenus logo, you pointed that the font is curvy and the lotus is angular. It's never been so that if the mark is round then the type too has to follow similar style.

well, DC is a tourist attraction and you do have foreigners who tend to see these places esp of recent times. the main reason it needs to stand out is to gain their curiosity about our diverse cultures. the logo doesn't hold the depth of this and is abstracted so much so it looses the essence. i guess opinions differ and i was critiquing it from a design/style point of view. i still stand by what i said though. please don't take it personally. goodluck.
