Cool. You designed the logo of an internationally recognized brand? Now, I'm envious. ;) But I never understood the mark! Does it have any significance? I don't think it's an abstract.

Logitech logo eh, I worked on this brand three years ago, thought I guy called Lee Barnstaple designed it. If you aren't Lee, someone needs to explain!

hmmm looking up some background info I'd hate to add this to the gallery only to find out there is some copyright issues with it. @saawan its an abstract laser mouse.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment:

sawaan - thank you. Nothing much to understand - just an 'energetic gesture'.

clashmore - the bigger the pond, the more room to swim.

gunnyhighway - Lee Barnstable (whoever he is) did NOT design this logo. I did, in 1996. I also designed (in 1988), the logo Logitech had before this one.

ClimaxDesigns - the logo is Logitech's, but I have the right to show it as a legitimate example of my work - because it is.

I looked up plumbailey, his name is tim wilkinson and that guy is the creator of the mark. I also am impressed he joined logopond. I couldn't seem to find your Frog design studio anywhere online plumb, are you still designing?

I always was a fan of this mark. It's young and energetic and holds up still today.

sisudesigns - thank you for your kind comment.

frogdesign was my employer from 1988 to 1991. They now have offices all over the world. At the time, I was the first ever graphic designer to work for them, and they had an office in Campbell, near San Jose, California. I designed the earlier Logitech logo while I was there.

The logo we are commenting on here though, was designed by me in 1996, during which time I was a freelancer, living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I live in England now.

I am still designing (when I can get the work).

Did you have anything to do with the "3D-ification" of the logo?

"I also am impressed he joined logopond" lol i don't really know how to take that remark, you'd be surprised the people who have logopond accounts whether they upload to them or not is something else. I mean for crying out loud Jerry Kuyper was a judge for the awards doesn't get too much bigger than th, maybe latteral but not bigger :D

was allways a fan of this logo, very very original.
And after over 10 years still modern, like it was made yesterday.

Glad I can say that to the designer himself. wow.

Clashmore - no, I had nothing to do with the 3D -ing of the logo. (By the way, I've checked out your logos - lovely stuff.)

So, now I'm going to have a look at the logos of all who've taken the time to comment on my work - sorry I havn't done so yet. Thanks again. More soon.

Congratulation and I will be waiting to see more logos from you on LP.

It took me until today to float this. I wasn't sure if I liked it or not, because it has sort of an '80s feel to me.

But, like others have said, after 12 years this logo still fits among other logos on the electronics shelf. I especially like the monochrome version on my mouse. :)

Hey, you designed the "Intel Inside" logo, too, right? You should post that logo on LP. That logo is everywhere man!

Jul. 26 '08

jjjost - sorry to say I did not design the Intel Inside logo - but I did design the prototypes for the 'new' generation of Intel labels which you see these days on your computers - the ones with the rounded tops and corners etc.

Jul. 26 '08

plumbailey said:

Thanks to you all for your comments. I have worked for some famous design firms which is how Logitech came to be a client of mine once upon a time. I've done quite a few logos - but not thousands. It is wonderful to me that this logo still holds up after 12 years - but hey, Paul Rand designed the IBM logo more than half a century ago and it still looks fantastic. Now THAT'S good design.

God knows why this log is getting bummed so much its nae that great just cos its a large company and its well known, its nothing compared to the works of paul rand n who ever says so is a clown, just because the ebay and google logos are well reconised around the world doesnt make them master pices, this is a cool logo but its nae half as good as sum of the other stuff on here

Jul. 27 '08

ClimaxDesigns said:

i didnt delete jayell's comment so this would be in context.

That is not only a rude comment but really shows your ignorance and lack of critical thinking as it pertains to logo design. Logo design and design in general is not a 'pretty' art form, some of the quirkiest and seemingly simple (not simplistic, but simple) logos are the most memorable, and the assertion that that size of the company has anything to do with its brand recognizably is just plain ignorant.

It's in part the identity that makes a large company's brand recognizable and memorable and the more quirky and unique its symbol, the easier it is to separate it from other like brands, not understanding this concept shows a gross misunderstanding and naivety of brand marketing and identity design itself. Why do you think companies update their logo as opposed to coming up with an entirely new one(that's not o say companies don't totally revemp their identities but far less often than a simple update)? It's because they understand that people tend to cling to a brand that has been marketed effectively, and while wanting a more modern look don't want to sacrifice brand identity.

(personal opinion ahead) Paul Rand was not famous in logo design because he made pretty logos that were timeless, I believe he became famous because his logos were ahead of his time, so looking at some of his work today they appear to be crisp and inline with todays style which were in part shaped by his design thus setting the scene for his work to become 'timeless'.

I believe that a logo becomes timeless due to good design and great brand marketing and if IBM had not become the huge company it is today would we even be talking about its logo, maybe not, maybe so. The identity represents the brand, marketing makes the brand recognized socially, a logo is nothing but a vessel that the brand is identified with which is nothing if it is not backed by effective marketing and in the end a useful product.

Aesthetically the google and ebay logo may not be 'masterpieces', but the fact that they effectively identity the brand, unmistakable to any other brand makes them 'master pieces'. We would all do well to learn that lesson.

Another fine addition to the pond and in the same context, the gallery as well. I find it an honor just to be listed and viewed on the front page as a major brand such as this. For what it is worth I have always loved the abstract quirkiness of this brand and it needs no explanation from my point of view. This is a mark that, well, just works! Nice one!

@ ClimaxDesigns: VERY well said.

I always thought the Logitech logo looked like an eye, with the green part being the inner-side of the nose, and the lashes off to the other side. I assumed because one of their products was the camera that sits on your monitor. Even if that has nothing to do with it, it's still great, that's just what my eyes have always seen. :)

Either way - it's under the palm of my hand.

It's one of those logos that I'm surprised they went for. It's very strange and unusual.

Love it.
