I actually thought about doing it red, but as the spade is black I made it black.

Nice approach. Thought, you could tune that spade into a heart by taking out the little white space in the "E"E and then giving a slight dark little serif in the same space to make the negative space heart.
Then place it on the red BG. just thinking.
hope that makes sense. then you would have both the spade and hearts covered in the deck.
