I'd be curious to see what it looks like without the ridges on the back of the lizard. It might simplify it too much, but maybe not.
Nice integration of mark and type.
Genius. My only criticism is that I had to look hard to see the face/head. Maybe that area should be yellow. It would also help balance it a little (like gthobbs said.)
I agree with SpiffyJ, when the logo is viewed smaller (like in my RSS feed) it looks like the lizard has two tails, can't see the head. If it was filled in or had thicker lines it'd be easier to tell it's the head. Very cool overall though.
There's a lot to like about this with nice lines and colors. Though I feel like it's a tough choice to drive the head of a mascot down into the "a" (unless the species was known for sticking their heads in the ground, like ostriches?) Would like to see it reversed, where the tail curls into the "a"...

i think you're misinterpreting it meat.?
it is the tail morphing into the "a", the head is up the top looking to the right... (can see his eye)
Perhaps this is an indication that the head's line art does need to be a bit heavier...?

oops, i mean Meta, as in Metaeducation [not calling you a Meat :) ]
What threw me off is that the eye looks a lot like a (C) or (R) symbol. Thus I just filtered it out, and interpreted the thin outline of the face as being a tail... where you'd expect a little symbol like that to be.
You mention making the line art heavier... I'd suggest going a step further than and actually pull the face out of shadow. If it were me, I'd also throw in a capital "T" at the beginning to lead upwards... and I think adding more spacing around the composition would increase the readability. Here's a pixely-draft of some changes I might suggest:
Thanks for the comments. This is the final stage of the logo and the client agreed on it sometime ago.
I have provided many many options including some of them from the comments above.
Still the client liked this version at the time and he chose it.
Thanks again fellows.
I have tried, if i were the client i definetly choose a thicker head with the head lines more like the entire concept...but, again, he was very drawn by this as it is here.
As for the eye, yes eye actually is a ®.
