This came out nice, NOMA.

Jeff Fisher LogoMotives said on Feb. 03 '08

Very nice imagery and appropriate type

Hayes Image said on Feb. 03 '08

It really does have a nice mix of Euro & Asian style to it, I like it...

dache said on Feb. 03 '08

I dont think its a good selling point to have unkept chefs as this logo portrays.

logomotive said on Feb. 03 '08

dache, I'm going to have to disagree, to me I feel as if the chef really into his work.Does not say unkept but hard working and into it.

Jeff Fisher LogoMotives said on Feb. 03 '08

I agree Mike (logomotive). I think the illustration style adds so much to this identity. Not only does it convey the working chef aspect - it also has an almost Asian watercolor painting quality to it.

NOMADESIGN said on Feb. 03 '08

What dache's says was the point of view of the wife of the chef... they battle it out... and at the end the chef got his logo.
For us it reminded the mark left by a glass of wine after a good lunch on a white sheet.
... or the inspiration given by a doodle made on some napkin during a meal.
The clean typo operate as a contrast.

OcularInk said on Feb. 03 '08

Yep, I agree with both the Logomotives as well. @ Jeff - "it also has an almost Asian watercolor painting quality to it." I was thinking the same thing.

Again, nice work NOMA.

spasquini said on Feb. 04 '08

I think the the dirt in the mark does not fit so well with the image of a restaurant.
The design is nice but the connection between dirt and food can be misunderstood.

dache said on Feb. 04 '08

OcularInk: Of course you do.

Hard working does not mean filthy. Every presentation photo you see of a Michelin star style restaurant is classy and clean, not covered in food so that you believe he cooks well. This dirty looks refers more to a rushed, under staffed and unorganized chef.

harry bissett said on Feb. 04 '08

@dache Agreed

I know I wouldn't want to eat any food at this place.

AL said on Feb. 04 '08

I have to agree with dache and the chef's wife on this one.

nido said on Feb. 04 '08

Its a logo!!!.. no one with any sense would make their salable commodity a dirty chef/restaurant/food... & no one in their right minds would think thats what this place was implying!... sheesh... you guys live & die by this stuff.. get a life...

nice logo. ill eat there.. they have humor... i like that.

Hayes Image said on Feb. 04 '08

am I missing something, what is all this about the chef's wife?

chanpion said on Feb. 04 '08

When I saw this in the thumbs I was drawn to it imediately. I also didn't find it 'unkept' as well but rather a deep passion for cooking. And to choose a colour the same as a good red wine was just perfect. Bravo!

chanpion said on Feb. 04 '08

Dache: "OcularInk: Of course you do." What the hell did that comment mean. Mate, sarcasm is not appreciated if that was your intention to ridicule Occ's consentment with the Logomotives. Are you subtly suggesting he is a conformist. Just stick with your constructive crit like you have been doing and stop undermining others' comments. That line was just completely unnecessary.

NOMADESIGN said on Feb. 04 '08

I think we have a battle between Epicurians and Democritians...

spiral said on Feb. 04 '08

i love it! to me it said watercolor and not "dirty", but if that's an issue to some, maybe it can somewhat be resolved by changing the color to something less "dirty", like blue or green?

hyperlogo said on Feb. 04 '08

At first I thought the logo looks a little too much like a "bloody" chef hat...like the head chef got mad at his employees or the employees got mad at the chefs head. Either way... This is how the average joe may look at it.
On the other hand I think that artists/or designers can appreciate this logo. I think it was wonderfully done..and after all that scrutinizing of the chefs hat you are taken to the "Very clean" fonts which bring you where the artist (i think) is taking you...to a classy / high end restaurant. So after all that being said... I really like it.

OcularInk said on Feb. 04 '08

@ dache: Your comments speak volumes about your character.

OcularInk said on Feb. 04 '08

@ chanpion: Yours do too. :-D

melanger said on Feb. 04 '08

The only way to resolve this debate is to all meet up in Japan and try this restaurant out, have a chat to the chef and his wife over a glass of wine and of course have a meal.

it maybe due to the fact im listening to cool but eery piano, but in this logo Im see what the other positive commenters have seen. A hard working chef with a passion for what he does. it makes me think about my own passion for food. dammit im flying to japan to try this place out.

logomotive said on Feb. 04 '08

and there you have it, BUUURP! ahhh that was good.

Hayes Image said on Feb. 04 '08

I'm with Melanger, let's all forget our troubles with a round of saké :)

NOMADESIGN said on Feb. 04 '08

So you know guys... my wife is translating your very interesting comments to the chef... I got to try that restaurant as well... it has a very attractive menu already.

Chef's listening in? In that case, I'll have;

Filet mignon (medium rare) with a bearnaise sauce & a side of sautéed mushrooms, with a nice pinot noir... :)

chanpion said on Feb. 05 '08

I'll have what MikeE and Hayes is having....

wurdz said on Feb. 12 '08

Looks dirty. Cool concept however. I wouldn't eat there, unless the hat was clean.

Beautiful logo.

ladiesman-217 said on May. 22 '09

Hi, first off just wanna point out I'm just a newbie here, my opinion might not even compare to you guys'.
But gotta say that I like this logo, to me, besides what Jeff (Logomotive) says about this having an asian watercolor feel to it - I also find the mark (logogram) reminiscent of red stamps you'd find oriental paintings, which is a great idea i think, since this type of stamp only existed on Japanese/Chinese paintings and gives a very unique identity to eastern artworks for so many centuries... Thus having it used on a French restaurant over in Japan gives people an idea on the mix of east and west really well,in my opinion.
Nice work Noma, just a beginner's suggestion... but maybe you could try cleaning the 'smear' effect a little on the hat and make an update for comparison...
