Colour:
Illustrator/ Select the objects you want to fill with same colour. You want to make this into a singel object or a Compound path. Go to Effect > Pathfinder > Add

Now you can fill with a gradient to your liking

Thanks brandon, thx is right about the process, that font is great, you just have to play with the alternate caracters.
